pictures of garbage


I just came across Vik Munis’s fairly recent project, Wasteland, and I had to share. A native to Brazil, Munis wanted to use his artistic practice to give more power to the people in his home country working in one of the largest open-air dumps in Latin America – Jardim Gramacho. So, he committed two years to working in collaboration with these garbage pickers; photos were taken, trash was collected, work was produced. All the profits went to these people. This is a great example of art having a direct social function. Also, it makes the garbage part of something really beautiful, without hiding the fact that its garbage.
