painting during violence

28Apr11

BBC’s latest headlines included an article today about an Ivory Coast painter who was locked in his workshop during the recent ten-day battle in Abidjan. The artist, Aboudia, painted 30 large canvases while the battle was happening to document what he saw. I was moved by Aboudia’s compulsion to paint during the dangerous circumstances, as well as his commitment to paint the truth. His style is also significant; though fast and childlike, it is a common style of his city’s street art and speaks to the community.

The BBC article explains the circumstances in more detail and this article provides more information about the Ivory Coast crisis.
