drawings of artists &documentations

Dan Fischer draws incredibly realistic renditions of photographs of prominent artists, sculptures, and art events from the last century. Look at them! His tremendous skill at realism coupled with the patience and concentration that went into the process demands attention from anyone. There is also something to be explored about his interpretation of a photograph of a sculpture, event, or artist. Because he is drawing what was photographed originally for evidence that the art existed, Fischer is providing the viewer with a more intimate documentation of what we cannot experience firsthand. In this case, drawing is like a research process on its own. I also appreciate that I have multiple reference points to consider: the present drawing, its subject matter, the historical reference, the subject-artist’s original intention, etc.

The following drawings are on view until October 8 at the Allison Jacques gallery in London. images via. info via.

Yves Klein

Louise Bourgeois, Germinal

Gerhard Richter

Joseph Beuys
